The Chinese represent persons as being possessed by 鬼, who employ the mouth of the possessed person to declare audibly the mind of the dæmon. The ghosts of murdered persons, possess others. Dæmons worshipped by the Chinese, are represented, like those of the western world, partly as spirits of a different origin from men, and partly as having once been men. What Plutarch taught, is what the Chinese generally believe, that the souls of virtuous men are advanced to the rank of dæmons, and from dæmons they are exalted into gods.
