A solid line‘—’represents yang, the masculine or positive principle in nature; a broken line‘’represents yin, the feminine or negative principle in nature. Eight combinations of three lines - all solid, all broken, or a combination of solid and broken lines - form the Eight Trigrams, and each trigram represents a certain kind of matter. (乾 Qián), represents heaven; (坤 Kūn), represents earth; (坎 Kǎn), represents water; (离 Lí), represents fire; (震 Zhèn), represents thunder; (艮 Gèn), represents mountain; (巽 Xùn), represents wind; (兑 Duì), represents marsh. These are paired to form 64 hexagrams, representing various natural and social phenomena. For instance, the 师 Shī hexagram is formed by the 坤 Kūn trigram over the 坎 Kǎn trigram, meaning water under the ground; and the 比 Bǐ hexagram is formed by reversing these trigrams, meaning water above ground. The theory is expounded in detail in The Book of Changes. Said to be invented by Fuxi, the Eight Trigrams were used in divination.八卦phr.ba gua〈汉〉八卦八卦1. the Eight Diagrams in Chinese mythology八卦Eight Trigrams双向☞闲话--八卦八卦the Eight Trigrams英華英華英華英華★◀▶英華☞DIAGRAMS英華☞DIAGRAM英華☞Diag●●●英華☞EIGHT |
